Reflection Essay
Spring 2023
Professor Hammett
English Composition 2
This semester of English Composition 2 has certainly been an interesting journey. I have personally learned quite a bit from this class and there was information that I’ll actually retain. Though I do have quite a bit of disdain for English courses, or any course that has an emphasis on writing for that matter, this one wasn’t so bad. I will say overall this course had its good and bad, but that should be obvious since no course can be perfect.
First, the essays. Essays are an important part of English courses, and the reason is self-explanatory, but it was a grueling task to gather the dedication to write them. They did have their benefits though. For example, the first project in this course, the argumentative essay about social epidemics, improved my ability to look for information on the internet. It also helped me develop a deeper understanding of how complex these topics were and how there wasn’t necessarily a “right” solution to these problems. Other essays, such as the analysis essay of The Plague, helped me with critical thinking and deciphering the purpose of said story. These essays have also helped me gauged my writing skill level and what needs to improve. The bad thing about these essays, as mentioned before, was gaining the dedication and motivation to write them. It’s more a reflection on my character, but the idea of spending hours writing a paper that I have no interest in does not bring joy. It borders the feelings of amotivation, boredom, and dread instead. I’ll just say that those feelings certainly don’t help when you need to write a multiple-page essay.
Second, the overall simplicity of the course. This course is by far my most memorable one due to the simplicity of it all and its amazing professor. The class didn’t overload the amount of work we had to do, which is a grace, and I am incredibly thankful for that. Professor Hammett was also, by far, one of the best educators I’ve had. The materials she taught were relatively easy to understand and to put into use. At no point did the material she taught feel forced or unnecessary, they were simple but pragmatic. These factors made the class much more enjoyable and didn’t make it feel like a chore.
Overall, this course wasn’t as dreadful as I thought it would be. Sure, I needed to write essays, but it’s not like I didn’t learn anything from them. They have helped me further develop my critical thinking and analysis skills. Not only that, but I also now know where to look for information in case I ever need to. The professor and the material she covered also made this course much more enjoyable. Professor Hammett was truly one of a kind educator. I want to conclude this by acknowledging the fact that I wasn’t really the type to turn in my assignments on time, and for that I want to apologize. This is ironic since I still need to work on my second project after this.
